Recreational Therapist

Provide therapeutic support through individual, group, and community programming, to support and promote clients’ treatment goals, promoting clinical best practices through provision of services and documentation.

Essential Duties

  • Oversee all therapeutic activity programming, to include individual, group and program/community activities and events. Collaborate with appropriate colleagues to maintain a consistent schedule of residential activities. Ensure provision of necessary staffing, supplies, facilities, and communication appropriate to each activity/event. Consider resident needs and treatment goals in development of therapeutic activity programming.
  • Provide support and supervision to staff facilitating activity programming to ensure quality, consistency and alignment with client needs and program mission and values. Offer training and skill-development opportunities to staff as indicated.
  • Communicate and collaborate with other team members to promote client and staff participation in programming.
  • Provide individualized skills support services to identified clients in support of their therapeutic goals. Develop and maintain working alliances with clients to support progress towards treatment goals. Assess the needs of clients and collaborate with both clients and team to monitor necessary changes.
  • Develop individualized recovery plans in collaboration with residents within a person-centered treatment model. Engage in timely review of recovery plans to ensure a high standard of clinical care.
  • Provide direct counseling services to identified residents in support of their therapeutic goals. Develop and maintain working alliance with residents to support progress towards treatment goals. Assess the needs of residents and collaborate with clients and teams to monitor necessary changes.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the natural support system of residents, provide education and support and assist in discharge planning.
  • Lead groups and related activities utilizing established evidence-based practices where applicable. Engage in continual development of therapeutic activity groups within the larger residential programming.
  • Develop and implement individual and group programming focused on skill development and quality of life needs presented by clients. This may include healthy eating, exercise, ADLs, social engagement, community engagement, and recreation.
  • Collaborate with members of the Clinical Team to further support enhanced clinical services, specifically in the facilitation of therapeutic group and activity programming.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation via the electronic health record, including documentation of all related contacts and provided services.
  • Develop and maintain relationships with the natural support systems of clients, providing education, support and collaboration related to client goals as indicated.
  • Support established organizational policies and procedures in the day-to-day duties of the job.
  • Communicate effectively with Directors, Managers, and staff within the organization.
  • Work positively with staff in a way that promotes development and strong staff morale.
  • Participate in organization meetings, special projects, and other related duties for the organization.
  • Support the mission of the organization with positive presentation.
  • Collaborate on system development within the organization to promote efficiencies for staff and the people we serve with a primary focus on best practices.
  • Work with appropriate community groups to develop creative programming and address needs of residents outside of the organization.
  • Ability to correctly interpret and apply rules, policies and procedures, regulations, and standards in a consistent, systematic manner.
  • Communicate clearly both verbally and in writing.
  • Establish and maintain effective professional working relationships.
  • Identify problem areas and develop effective and efficient corrective action.
  • Work with team and other organization personnel to solve issues in a consistent manner.
  • Duties are performed under the direct supervision of the Clinical Manager. Additional supervision may be provided by other members of the Leadership Team.
  • Regular and consistent attendance per an established schedule.
  • Other duties as assigned by supervisory personnel.

Physical Demands

These physical demands are representative of the physical requirements necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the responsibilities of this job, the employee is required to talk and hear. The employee is often required to sit and use their hands and fingers, to handle or feel and to manipulate keys on a keyboard. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, reach with arms and hands, climb or balance, and to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Vision abilities required by this job include close vision. The employee must travel between locations and occasionally attend seminars.

Working Conditions

Working conditions are normal for an office environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate. Work requires occasional weekend and/or evening work based upon the needs of the business.

Requirements/Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, the individual must be able to perform each essential responsibility satisfactorily and will have the following experience and attributes:

  • Master’s Degree in counseling.
  • Experience in the provision of mental health treatment and programming.
  • Strong working knowledge of the fundamental types of emotional, behavioral, mental health, and substance abuse issues related to the population to be served.
  • Working knowledge and experience in the provision of a variety of service modalities to meet the needs of the population served with an emphasis on knowledge of evidence-based practices.
